A four-time All-American in middle to long distance races, Steve Barnes ranks among the best swimmers in program history. Barnes claimed a pair of All-American showings during his junior season with an 11th place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay and 14th in the 1,650 freestyle (16:05.01). His first All-America performance came during his freshman campaign in the 1,650 as he finished 15th and he capped off his career with a 14th place performance (16:03.69) in the 1,650 his senior season.

Barnes was also an 11-time Empire 8 Conference champion during his time at IC and was named Empire 8 Rookie of the Year in 2001-02, as well as Swimmer of the Meet at the UNYSCSA state meet.

Academically, Barnes was named UNYSCSA All-Academic twice and was a CoSIDA District 1 All-Academic first-teamer in 2002-03.

To date, Barnes still owns school records in the 1,000 freestyle with a top time of 9:37.93 in 2005 and the 1,650 at 16:01.37, which he set in 2002. He also ranks second all-time in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:36.58, which took place in 2004.
