Women's Crew Finishes Fifth at NCAA Championship

RESULTS

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.
– The Ithaca College women's crew finished fifth with 35 points at the NCAA Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Indianapolis Rowing Center at Eagle Creek Park.

Bates repeated as the National Champion, winning with 56 points. WPI took second with 51 points while Wellesley came in third with 46 points and Wesleyan (Conn.) earned fourth with 38 points.

The second Varsity 8 – coxswain Olivia Southworth, Dania Bogdanovic, Ella Sarachan, Allison Ritting, Lauren O'Dell, Mackenzie Morean, Greta O'Hara, Nicola Vigliotti and June Fortner – opened the Bombers' day with a win in the Petite Final. IC raced to a time of 7:44.432, edging Washington College which finished in 7:47.155.

Although Washington College was ahead after the first 500 meters, Ithaca made up time through the next 500 stretch. After the third 500 meters, Ithaca had nearly a one-second lead of Washington College before winning by almost three seconds at the end.

Ithaca's Varsity 8 then raced to a fourth-place finish in the Grand Final. The boat of coxswain Jennie Brian, Savannah Brija, Sarah Snow, Libby Ryan, Meredyth Busam, Allison Arndt, Sierra Keat, Kelly Csernica and Liza Caldicott raced to a time of 7:09.56.

It was a close race from the jump, as four of the six boats were within six seconds of each other during the first 500 meters

Bates won the race in 7:01.012 while WPI came in second with a time of 7:06.932 and Wellesley took third in 7:09.117. The next 1,000 meters proved to be similar to the first 500, until Bates slowly started pulling away from the field, building up boats-length lead by the end of the race.

This is the third year in a row that the Bombers have finished within the top five at the NCAA Championship, as IC took fourth in 2017 and 2018. Since 2002, IC has finished fifth or better in 13 of its 15 NCAA Championship appearances.
