INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Ithaca College women's crew opened up the 2019 NCAA Championships on Friday afternoon at the Indianapolis Rowing Center at Eagle Creek Park.

Although day one was set to start at 8 a.m., races ultimately were delayed until 4 p.m. due to a storm the previous night, which caused debris on the course. The first day of competition consisted of preliminary rounds, in preparation for Saturday's finals.

The Bombers' Varsity 8 took second in the first of two heats, racing to a time of 6:35.334. The boat of coxswain

Sierra Keat,
Kelly Csernica and
Liza Caldicott was edged by Bates, which won the heat in 6:28.620.

IC's time was the second-fastest, as Bates raced the fastest time of the day among Varsity 8 boats. The Bombers move on to Saturday's Grand Final, which consists of places one through six, at 11:36 a.m.

June Fortner finished fourth in the heat with a time of 7:05.972.

Wesleyan not only won the heat, but also posted the fast time among second Varsity 8 boats with a time of 6:47.652. Of the eight boats, Ithaca's crew finished fifth in the preliminary round and moved on to race in the repechage at 7:20 p.m. to fight for a spot in the Grand Final.

The Bombers went on to finish third in the repechage, narrowly missing out on the Grand Final. They will now race in Saturday's Petite Final at 11 a.m.

Action on Saturday begins again at 8 a.m. The first 12 races of the day are Division I races, followed by two Division II races. The first Division III race of the day will be the second Varsity 8's Petite Final at 11 a.m.
