SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The fourth-ranked Ithaca College gymnastics team continued to showcase its excellent recent form on Sunday when the squad traveled to Springfield College for its second event of the week. The Bombers posted a new season high for team score for a third straight meet, registering a 189.950 to place second in the three-team event.
Taking on NCGA East contender Springfield, as well as a cross-divisional opponent in Southern Connecticut State, IC kept up its best run of the season and looks to be firing on all cylinders heading into a two-event homestand to conclude the regular season. The Bombers hit new season highs for team score in three rotations, posting new high marks in vault, uneven bars, and floor exercise. The floor was the highlight of the day for Ithaca, as the team shattered a program record that was set last season with a 48.550 in the third rotation of the afternoon. The score ultimately proved the difference in surpassing the host-team, as the Bombers outpaced their regional rival 189.950-to-188.100.
Three IC gymnasts marked new personal bests on the day. Two of those efforts came during the bars rotation, which continued to round into a strength for Ithaca on the day. Sophomore
Katie Holcomb set a new best for the second straight meet this week, surpassing her 9.350 from Wednesday's meet at Cortland with a 9.400 this afternoon. Sophomore
Courtney Christoforo also was fantastic on Sunday, easily turning in her best mark of the season with a personal-best 9.725 that was just shy of Jessica Bolduc's program-record mark (9.775). The Bombers other personal best came in floor exercise, as first-year
Mackenzie Kennedy continued to assert herself as a force in the event with a career-best 9.800.
In total, Ithaca had 11 total Top-10 scores over the four rotations on the day. Earning those marks were: senior
Carolyn Nichols (Vault), sophomore
Baylie Trammell (Vault), sophomore
Marin Sheridan (Vault), Christoforo (Bars), sophomore
Lauren Hansen (Bars), Holcomb (Bars, Beam), sophomore
Savannah Gigandet (Bars), senior
Rachel Lee (Beam), Kennedy (Floor), and senior
Victoria Gery (Floor).
Much like Ithaca's impressive mid-week performance in Cortland, IC got its day started on Sunday on the uneven bars rotation. The team immediately set the tone, breaking the 47.000-mark for the first time this year with a five-score total of 47.075. Christoforo led the way for the Bombers with her career-high 9.725 good for second-place on Sunday. Hansen tallied a 9.500 to come in sixth, while Holcomb's 9.400 was good to tie for eighth-place. Gigandet marked a 9.325 to tie for 10
th-place and round out Ithaca's Top-10 finishes for the day. Trammell (9.100) and Lee (8.525) also competed for the Bombers, finishing in 12
th and 16
th, respectively.
The lone hiccup for Ithaca on Sunday came in the second rotation, as IC struggled to follow up the quality performance at Cortland on Wednesday with another consistent showing. Although the marks were not quite as high as a group, the Bombers had some significant individual success. Headlining the group was Holcomb who posted a huge score of 9.750 that topped all competitors on Sunday. Lee added Ithaca's other Top-10 finish in the event, bouncing back from a tough outing in her first rotation to card a 9.550 to tie for eighth-place. Junior
Emily Szembrot narrowly missed out on the Top-10, but still turned in her biggest score of the year with a 9.500 to finish 12
th. Also competing for IC were: senior
Nina Bustamante (8.925, 13
th), junior
Paige Landes (8.900, 14
th), and junior
Cassidy Marquette (8.100, 18
th).
Ithaca righted the ship with a historic performance in the third rotation, posting huge numbers across the board to set a new program record at 48.550 as a group. It was Kennedy and Gery that led IC's impressive string of performances in the event, each scoring 9.800 to finish in a four-way tie for third-place on the day. A trio of Bombers rounded out the scoring lineup in Marquette, sophomore
Alexis Griffin, and Nichols. All three posted 9.650 on their routines, finishing in a three-way tie with each other for 11
th-place. Trammell was Ithaca's other competitor, posting a very strong 9.550, but having to settle for 16
th in the loaded field in the event.
The Bombers brought things home with a strong finish in a season-high effort in the vault. The team amassed a five-score total of 47.700 that easily surpassed its previous high mark of 47.425 set this past Wednesday. It was the 2017 All-American that led the way for IC on this day, as Nichols hit a season high with a 9.700 to finish in second-place. Trammell was right behind her in fifth with a 9.575, while Sheridan was Ithaca's other Top-10 finisher in posting a 9.500 that was good to tie for ninth-place. Christoforo and Gery capped the scoring group for IC, the former finishing in 11
th with her career-best 9.475 and the latter scoring a 9.450 that tied for 14
th-place. Marquette was Ithaca's other competitor in the lineup, posting a 9.150 in an 18
th-place finish.
Ithaca will make its home debut next Sunday, February 24, when it hosts the annual Harriet Marranca Memorial Invitational. Start time for the meet is currently scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
