Farmingdale, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team (28-9-1), seeded third in the NCAA New York Regional, dropped a 2-0 decision to second-seeded Farmingdale (31-10) Thursday in a second-round game. The Bombers will face sixth-seeded Castleton State (34-15) Friday at 3:30 p.m. in an elimination game.
Ithaca was held to five hits – including two in the first seven innings – but put runners on base in each of the last six innings, including two in the bottom of the ninth. The Bombers left nine runners on base; the Rams threw out two runners on the bases and turned a double play.
In the ninth, senior first baseman
Mike Preite and freshman designated hitter Vinny Gneo both singled and a wild pitch put the tying run in scoring position before the Rams struck out Ithaca's last two hitters.
The Bombers loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth inning on a leadoff walk to sophomore third baseman
Colby Gee, Preite's single and a walk to Gneo. Farmingdale turned a 1-2-3 double play then retired the next hitter on a fly ball to escape trouble.
Freshman
John Prendergast pitched a complete game, striking out seven and not issuing a walk.
