Baseball Team Splits With Stevens

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The baseball team (9-10, 3-3 Empire 8) split Sunday's doubleheader with visiting Stevens Institute of Technology (6-17, 2-5 Empire 8), winning game one 5-4 and losing the second game 10-3.

In game one, Ithaca jumped out to a 5-0 lead then withstood a late Stevens rally that saw the Ducks score four seventh-inning runs and put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position.

Sophomore Jasper Adams (Amherst/Amherst, Mass.) recorded his first career save, picking up the game's final two outs after entering the game with the tying run on base. Senior Aaron Sapp (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) earned the win, improving to 3-3. He allowed only three hits and two walks, blanking the Ducks over the first six innings before Stevens broke through in the top of the seventh.

The Bombers got on the board with three second-inning runs. Senior first baseman Trevor Wolf (Lansing/Freeville) and junior left fielder Teagen Barresi (Lansing/Lansing) opened with doubles – Wolf's hit was his eighth of the weekend – to score the game's first run. Senior center fielder Rob Zappia (Greece Athena/Rochester) drove in a run when Stevens fumbled a double-play grounder with two runners on and junior second baseman Matt Keller (Pelham/Pelham) singled in a run.

Keller and Zappia, who both finished with two hits and two runs batted in, added run-scoring singles in the sixth.

In the nightcap, third baseman David Ahonen (Victor/Farmington), a graduate student, and senior right fielder Matt Streich (East Greenwich/East Greenwich, R.I.) both had two of Ithaca's eight hits.

The Bombers host Cazenovia Tuesday at 4 p.m.
