Bombers Defeat Montclair State 3-2

ITHACA, N.Y.--The baseball team (20-18) closed the regular season with a 3-2 win over visiting Montclair State 23-19) on Sunday. Senior Tom Fishback (Penfield/Webster) moved to 8-3 with the win, and allowed just two earned runs over seven innings.

Fishback struck out six and allowed just five hits in the win. He has thrown 82.2 innings on the season, the ninth most in Ithaca history. His 82.1 innings pitched in 2009 stand tenth all-time. Fishback holds a 20-9 career record, as well as a 2.85 career earned run average.

Sophomore reliever Tucker Healy (Needham/Needham) enter the game with two runners on and no outs and a 3-1 Bomber lead in the eighth inning. The Red Hawks attempted a sacrifice bunt, but Healy forced the batter to pop the ball back to the mound for the first out. After a strikeout, Montclair State cut the lead to one with a run-scoring single through the right side. Healy forced a fly out to end the inning.

Ithaca got two runners on in the bottom of the eighth but could not score them. In the top of the ninth, Healy walked the leadoff batter but got two strikeouts and a flyout to end the game and pick up his fourth save of the season. He stands fourth in program history with nine career saves.

Ithaca got on the board in the second inning, when freshman Ian Gaule (Columbia/East Greenbuch) was a hit by a pitch and came around to score on a ground ball off the bat of senior #T.J. Abone# (Rome/Rome Free Academy).

Gaule drove in thaca's second run on a third-inning sacrifice fly that plated junior David Ahonen (Victor/Farmington).

The Bombers allowed the Red Hawks to score their first run of the game in the top of the fourth, but took a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning when junior Trevor Wolf (Lansing/Freeville) drove in classmate Matt Streich (East Greenwich/East Greenwich, R.I.) on a single up the middle.

Wolf and Ahonen each had two hits in the game, as did senior Jon Krakower (The Berkshire School/Albany) and freshman Matt Keller (Pelham/Pelham).
