Hoboken, N.J.--Ithaca (4-9, 2-0 Empire 8, 2-0 New York Region) opened its conference schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Stevens Insitute of Technology (8-12, 0-2 Empire 8) on Friday. In the 7-1 game one win,. senior Tom Fishback (Penfield/Webster) picked up a complete game win, with senior #T.J. Abone# (Rome Free Academy/Rome) and junior Jarrod Surine (Trumansburg/Trumansburg) hitting home runs to pace the offense. In the second game, sophomore Tucker Healy (Needham/Needham, Mass.) pitched six shutout innings in his first career start en route to a 4-0 Ithaca win.
The Bombers jumped out to an early lead in the opening game, scoring five runs in the first three innings against the Ducks. In Ithaca's three-run second, freshman Matt Keller (Pelham/Pelham) was hit by a pitch to open the inning and moved to third on a Surine double. An infield error on a ball hit by senior Mike Armstrong (Penfield/Penfield) allowed Keller to score and moved Surine to third.
The next batter--senior Jon Krakower (The Berksire School/Albany)--walked to load the bases. After an Ithaca strikeout, junior Trevor Wolf (Lansing/Freeville) drove in Surine on a single to right field. Classmate David Ahonen (Victor/Farmington) knocked in the inning's third run on a fielder's choice.
In the third, Surine extended the lead to 5-0 on a two-out opposite field home run. After Stevens scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, Abone pulled the ball to right for his first career home run. Ahonen scored on the blast bring the score to 7-1 where it would stay for the remainder of the game.
Fishback threw his third complete game in four games started on the season. Over his seven innings he allowed just five hits and two walks. He struck out six and got eight groundball outs.
Wolf and Surine each had a pair of hits and a double in the win.
Healy, a first-team all-Empire 8 player as a reliever last year, struck out eight in the game two win. He allowed just six hits--five of them singles--and one walk. Through 14.2 innings on the season, Healy has struck out 18 batters. He has held opponents to a .176 batting average, and is now 4-0 in his career.
Freshman Jasper Adams (Amherst Regional/Amherst, Mass.) preserved the shutout by pitching a scoreless and hitless seventh.
The Bombers got on board early in the second game, with Krakower launching his second leadoff homer of the season. After stranding a pair of runners in the second, Ithaca scored two more runs in the third. Krakower was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and junior Matt Streich (East Greenwich/East Greenwich) followed with an opposite field single. Back-to-back run scoring singles from Ahonen and Abone extended the Bomber lead to 3-0.
Armstrong tacked on another run in the fourth on a single that plated Keller.
Ithaca had 10 hits in the second game, with Ahonen and Abone each picking up two.
The Bombers and Ducks meet up for another doubleheader Saturday. Game one is set to begin at noon.
