Redlands, Calif.--The Bombers opened the season with a 4-1 loss to Redlands (14-2) Sunday afternoon. Ithaca put its first two batters in the top of the ninth on base, but was unable to score in the final frame.
The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning, when the Bulldogs hit a pair of doubles to plate the game's first run. Ithaca righthander Tom Fishback (Penfield/Webster) stranded two men on base to end the Redlands threat in the inning.
The Bulldogs scored twice more in the bottom of the sixth, getting a pair of two-out RBI singles.
Ithaca got on the board in the top of the seventh. With one out, junior Matt Streich (East Greenwich/East Greenwich, R.I.) tripled to right. Senior Jon Krakower (The Berkshire School/Albany) drove in Streich and reached base on an infield throwing error. A single from sophomore Russ Martens (Avon/Avon, Conn.) put two Bombers on before Redlands forced a ground ball double play.
After the Bulldogs scored again in the eighth, Ithaca got a single from junior Trevor Wolf (Lansing/Freeville) and a walk by junior Sean Weber (Columbia/East Schodack) to put runners on first and second. Two popouts and a strikeout secured the win for Redlands.
Fishback pithced six innings for Ithaca, allowing three runs. He struck out two batters. Junior Bryan Thyroff (Pittsford Mendon/Pittsford) and freshman Jasper Adams (Amherst Regional/Amherst, Mass.) combined to pitch a scoreless seventh.
At the plate, seven Bombers each collected a hit.
Ithaca returns to action Monday against Rutgers-Newark. The game will be played at 2 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
