Volleyball Sweeps Clarkson

Jessica Hoeffner picked up seven kills in Ithaca's win over Clarkson.

ITHACA, N.Y.--Ithaca (10-9) snapped a three match losing streak on Tuesday night by defeating Clarkson (9-9). With the win, the Bombers improve their all time record against Clarkson to a perfect 24-0. Ithaca won by scores of 25-17, 25-22, 25-23.

Leading the attack for the Bombers was junior Jen Heberton (Darien/Darien, Conn.) with 16 kills. Freshman Jessica Hoeffner (Hauppauge/Hauppauge) recorded seven kills, with most of them coming late in set three to seal the victory.

Ithaca fell behind early in set one, but behind the serving of sophomore Tina Orlandini (Flintridge Sacred Heart/Altadena, Calif.) went on a six point run and opened up a 12-9 lead. They would then score 8 of the next 12 points to put the set out of reach.

Set two was tight throughout, with neither team able to pull ahead by more than two points. Clarkson led as late as 20-19, but Ithaca used strong serving by sophomore Taylor Horton (Lakeridge/Lake Oswego, Ore.) and two kills apiece from freshman Elizabeth Previte (Hunterdon Central/Flemington, N.J.) and Heberton to edge out Clarkson.

The momentum would carry over to set three, where Ithaca once again relied on serving from Orlandini and junior Francine Nikas (Greenwich/Greenwich, Conn) to open up a commanding 14-5 lead. Clarkson battled back, and pulled within one point at 24-23 before a Hoeffner kill gave Ithaca the victory.

Ithaca will return to action in the Nazareth Tournament on Friday against Brockport at 6:00 p.m.
