Alfred, N.Y. – The Ithaca men's swimming and diving team defeated Nazareth 194-114 and lost to Alfred 138-105 in a tri-meet Saturday at Alfred. Sophomore freestyle specialist Joe Gage (Edwin Oscar Smith/Storrs, Conn.) won three events for the Bombers. He captured the 1,000 freestyle (10:44.52), the 500 free (5:03.25) and 200 free (1:45.67).
Ithaca was also victorious in the 200 freestyle relay, as the quartet of senior Mike Ariel (Xaverian Brothers/Norwood, Mass.), sophomore Steve Croucher (Dallastown Area/York, Pa.), senior Shane Hamman (Henderson/West Chester, Pa.) and freshman Antoine Connors (Spartanburg/Spartanburg, S.C.) swam 1:29.94 to edge an Alfred relay by .26 seconds.
Connors also won the 50 free (22.24 seconds).
Freshman Jeff Rapp (Liverpool/Liverpool) finished second in both the 200 individual medley (2:04.58) and 100 backstroke (55.53 seconds).
The 200 medley relay team of Rapp, senior Brant Gawrys (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa), senior Ryan Wright (Methacton/Eagleville, Pa.) and sophomore Kramer Jakubek (Monroe-Woodbury/Monroe) finished second with a time of 1:41.78.
Sophomore diver Norman Nguyen (Brookline/Brookline, Mass.) finished third in the 3-meter diving event and fourth on the 1-meter board.
Ithaca hosts Rensselaer Saturday at 1 p.m in its first home dual meet of the season.
