MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Saturday was a day full of victory for the Ithaca College wrestling program, as they traveled all the way up to Middletown, Connecticut for a quad meet. Wesleyan played host to the Bombers as well as Oneonta and Williams College. Ithaca's lineup looked a little different than normal due to some shifting due to injuries, but that didn't take away from Ithaca's success. The day was all dual meet structure with no crowned champion, but there was no question as to who wore the crown after the final whistle. Below is a recap of Ithaca's dominance on the mat.
Ithaca over Oneonta 31-13
Ithaca's typical starters didn't lose a single match this entire dual meet despite the fact that they had to fill some gaps.
Jackson Gray, who typically wrestles 165, handled business at 174 picking up a major decision.
Travis Jones bumped to slide into the 165 slot where he picked up IC's first fall of the day. At 184 stands Joe Averill, who typically wrestles 30 pounds lighter at 157. The NCAA only allows you to bump up one weight class. Oneonta's score was also bloated by a forfeit at 141 where
Luis Hernandez typically picks up some team points. 149
Matthew Beyer and 197
Eze Chukwuezi picked up the slack both securing a six-point fall. Great start to the day for the Bombers.
Ithaca over Williams 36-13
Not many matches went the distance in this dual. Ithaca had three first period falls. 133
Isaias Torres had the "slowest" of the three with a brisk 1:45 fall while 197 Eze and HWT
Jeremy Mazzella both stuck their opponent in just over a minute. 184
Anthony Giovagnoli also picked up a six-point victory. Gray picked up a fall of the technical variety with a dominant 20-5 win. This was the fastest dual of the day by far with little commentary besides the quick results.
Ithaca over Wesleyan 30-15
The Bombers had four falls in the final dual enroute to their Saturday sweep. 197
Eze Chukwuezi didn't wrestle more than a period all day, securing Ithaca's quickest fall of the day at 45 seconds. Familiar faces doubled down on their pins as 133 Torres, 157 Jones, and HWT Mazzella all made quick work. 149 Beyer and 165 Gray completed their perfect days as they each picked up a decision victory. This dual meet portrayed a similar pattern on the day. The Bombers came out with a no-nonsense attitude. They handled each individual match very business-like on their way to victory.
Ithaca wrestling next competition is this upcoming Friday when they travel to Wilkes to compete in a dual meet. Although Wilkes lost to mutual opponents Wesleyan and Oneonta, they do have some ranked wrestlers scattered throughout their lineup.
