Men’s Tennis Drops Liberty League Opener to RIT

Box Score (PDF)

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's tennis team opened up its Liberty League schedule on Saturday afternoon when the Bombers traveled across town to Cornell's Reis Tennis Center to face RIT. Unfortunately, Ithaca was unable to get untracked on Saturday, as the Tigers jumped out to an early lead and took control during the singles session to best the Bombers by a final margin of 7-2. The loss drops Ithaca to 0-2 on the year and 0-1 in Liberty League action, while RIT improves to 3-3 on the year and 1-3 in Liberty League play.

The Bombers got off to an okay start to Saturday's contest. Although IC's third tandem of sophomore Artem Khaybullin and first-year Max Sobel struggled to get traction in an 8-2 defeat, the senior duo of Colten Lavery and Liam Spiegel earned a big first-doubles win over Brennan Bull and Jacob Meyerson to even the match at 1-1. Unfortunately, it was the Tigers that emerged from the doubles session with the crucial swing point, as the visitor's Nick Lim and Patrick Mathews snatched an 8-4 triumph over senior Sam Fried and junior George Lomas.

The Bombers struggled to rally the momentum when the top-half of the lineup returned to the courts for the singles session. Although much more competitive than last weekend's loss to University of Rochester, IC was able to snag just a single set in dropping each of the three matchups that clinched the victory for the Tigers. Spiegel delivered the closest result, coming within a few tiebreaker points of a victory in what was an eventual three-set loss to Patrick Mathews.

The highlight of the singles session came from Lomas in the fourth lineup slot. Lomas dominated his opening set in a 6-0 whitewashing, before he ultimately had to outlast RIT's Jake Wolicki in a third-set 10-7 super-breaker.

Ithaca will return to the courts on Sunday, March 8, when the Bombers play the first of four matches over Spring Break in Orlando, Florida, against nationally-ranked Carnegie Mellon. Start time for the match is set for 3:00 p.m.
