Women’s Golf Wins Match-Play Event Against Nazareth During Spring Break Trip

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Ithaca College women's golf team has been down in the Sunshine State since this past weekend getting some training in for the upcoming spring season. Although the majority of the trip is just getting the squad practice rounds on an actual golf course after being relegated to indoor training due to the typical Northeast winters, the Bombers did manage to get in a little competitive action on Tuesday. Ithaca faced Nazareth College in a match-play event with IC scoring a 3-1 victory in the head-to-head matchup against the Golden Flyers.

Spending the week in one of the golf capitals of the United States in Melbourne, Florida, the Bombers have been busy honing their craft on various courses in preparation for the approaching spring tournament season. IC took a brief detour from practice competition on Tuesday to face Nazareth at Baytree National Golf Links. The course is designed in the classic coastal links style and was recently voted as one of the Top-75 courses in the State of Florida.

Limited to just four match-ups, as the Golden Flyers had just four players on their trip, Ithaca ended up taking victories in three of them on the day. Junior captain, Peyton Greco, led the Bombers with a dominant performance against Deanna Tinch, winning 5-and-4. Greco jumped out to a quick early lead over Tinch and never relinquished the lead, clinching the win with a five-hole lead with just four holes left to play. First-year Bomber, Katie Chan, also scored a 5-and-4 victory in her head-to-head match against Keelin Paquette. IC's third victory of the day came from sophomore, Sophia Israel, who defeated Sara McCall 4-and-3. The lone loss sustained on the day was from sophomore, Alex Perry, who lost by a single point on a battle that came down to the final hole.

"For being our first time back on the course in a competitive format since early October, I thought we played well overall," head coach Keith Batson said. "We have a few more practice rounds left on our trip and we will look to maximize that experience in Florida in preparation for our return North."

The Bombers first tournament is scheduled to be in mid-April when the team plays host to the annual Ithaca College Invitational on Saturday, April 13, and Sunday, April 14.
