No. 27 RPI Snaps Men’s Tennis League Win Streak in 8-1 Defeat

Box Score LATHAM, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's tennis team was back on the courts Sunday afternoon when it took on of its most challenging opponents in 27th-ranked RPI at the Tri City Fitness Center in Latham, N.Y. Riding a two-match winning streak in League play, the Bombers looked to earn a huge statement win that would jettison the Bombers into a bye position with just one League match remaining on the schedule. Unfortunately, the nationally-ranked Engineers proved too much in running away from IC in an 8-1 final. The loss drops Ithaca's record to 4-8 on the year and 4-3 in Liberty League play.

Coming off its most comprehensive performance of the season in a midweek 8-1 home triumph, Ithaca hoped to carry the momentum to the road on Sunday. Sadly RPI took control early with three wins in doubles to take a big 3-0 lead. Two of the tandems bouts were just a two-game margin, as Sam McGrath and Lorenzo Viguie-Ramos fell 8-6 at second-doubles, while Liam Spiegel and Garrett Boleslav also posted an 8-6 decision at third-doubles. Minos Stavrakas and Colten Lavery had a tougher time finding cracks in RPI's top tandem, falling in an 8-3 final.

The Engineers carried the momentum into singles, taking five of the six matchups to pull away for the lopsided win. Ithaca's lone win came at second-singles, as McGrath turned in a masterful performance in defeating Andrew Imrie 6-3, 6-4. For McGrath, it was his 11th singles win of the campaign, while he improved to 9-3 at second-singles this season.

Sadly, Stavrakas was unable to maintain his perfect Liberty League record in falling to Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez 6-1, 6-1 in the first flight. The loss drops Stavrakas to 6-1 on the year in League singles play. Castillo-Sanchez was ranked 14th in the latest ITA Northeast Regional Rankings.
