PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's tennis team took to the courts for one final Empire 8 match on Saturday, May 6, when it battled perennial Empire 8 heavyweight and top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology in the Empire 8 Championship match at the Mendon Racquet Club in Pittsford, N.Y. The Ducks shutout the Bombers in a 5-0 decision, winning the program's eighth consecutive Empire 8 Tournament title, while Ithaca settled for Empire 8 Runner-Up for the eighth time over that span.
Stevens began the day with three victories in doubles to take a stranglehold on the match heading into singles play. The closest match for the Bombers came in the middle flight, as
Wes Davis and
Lorenzo Viguie-Ramos took five games off William Persson and Divin Sarthak of Stevens. Unfortunately, the Ducks' tandem held on for an 8-5 win.
The top-flight match of
Michael Gardiner and
Minos Stavrakas fell to Kyle Henry and Antonio Perich in an 8-4 decision. The third flight match was the widest margin of the three, as Stevens' Charles Drake and Michael Feldman defeated Ithaca's
Stefan Lazarevic and
Nate Wolf in an 8-2 bout.
Stevens scored its final points in the second and fourth flights. William Persson defeated
Michael Gardiner in a 6-2, 6-3 decision in the second flight. Drake followed with the clinching team point, scoring a 6-3, 6-3 decision over IC's
Colten Lavery in the fourth flight.
The NCAA will release the field for the Division III Tournament on Monday, May 8.
