Stavrakas Falls in Quarterfinals of ITA Northeast Regionals

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Sophomore Minos Stavrakas was Ithaca's lone competitor alive in the singles draw when play re-commenced on Sunday morning in the second day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regionals. Unfortunately, Ithaca men's tennis day came to an end during the early session, as Stavrakas lost his quarterfinal round bout.

Stavrakas punched his ticket Sunday after a strong pair of performances during the first two rounds on Saturday. He posted a dominant opening round win in a clinical effort against Ramapo's Adam Patrovics, scoring three breaks in taking the opening set 6-1. He continued to strong play in the second set, winning 6-2 to advance to the second round. The second year's strong play continued against a familiar opponent in Matt Puig of TCNJ. While Puig has bested Stavrakas in the past, the sophomore standout outlasted the talented TCNJ netter, scoring another straight-sets win 6-3, 6-4.

The difficulty level was ramped up even further on Sunday, as Stavrakas met the tournament's fifth overall seed in Sebastian Castillo-Sanchez or RPI. Although Stavrakas played competitively, he struggled to string together points throughout the day in falling to the talented Liberty League rival 6-2, 6-1.

The IC men's tennis team will resume the 2017-18 season with the commencement of its spring traditional season in February.
