MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. —The Ithaca College golf team squared off against rival SUNY Cortland Wednesday afternoon in a match play competition known as the Battle at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The Bombers, the six-time champions of the Empire 8, faced the Red Dragons, the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division II/III champions, in a series of match play singles contests.
Junior Kimberly Wong, a first-team All-Region and first-team All-Empire 8 selection last year, convincingly won her match, but Ithaca fell to Cortland 4-1.
Wong, who did not play on the team in the fall 2015 semester, secured a win over Taylor O'Halloran 6 and 5 for the Bombers' lone point of the day on the par-71, 5,807-yard Barefoot Resort & Golf Course.
The remaining matches were all close. Cortland's Tiffany Schapira handed Ithaca sophomore
Kyra Denish a 1-up decision, the same score that classmate and Empire 8 Player of the Year
Indiana Jones lost by to Melissa Rath.
Anna Haley also defeated IC sophomore
Lauren Saylor 1-up, while Brianna Sovring defeated senior
Mary Rooker 2-up to complete the scoring matches.
Competing as individuals, Mallory Rosch defeated senior
Colleen Vaughn 3 and 2 in the final competition of the day.
The Bombers conclude their Spring Break trip Thursday with the Battle at Barefoot, a four-team invitational featuring Ithaca, Cortland, William Smith and Denison University.
