Volleyball Drops Pair of Matches at Red Dragon Classic

Junior Marissa Woodcome was named to the all-tournament team.
Cortland, N.Y. -- The Ithaca volleyball team (1-3) dropped a 3-2 (25-21, 25-27, 25-20, 20-25, 15-5) decision to Lebanon Valley (2-1) and a 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-19) match to Vassar (2-2) on day two of the Cortland Red Dragon Classic on Saturday. Junior Marissa Woodcome (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford) was named to the all-tournament team.

Ithaca, who last faced Lebanon Valley in the first round of the 2010 NCAA playoffs, forced the Dutchmen to five sets, winning the second and fourth frames.

The first set bounced back-and-forth and held eight ties. After a 14-14 stalemate, Ithaca took a 17-14 edge but LVC answered to knot the game at 17. Lebanon Valley scored the game's final four points to break a 21-21 deadlock and claim the first.

Ithaca used a block by seniors Karin Edsall (Cornwall Central/Cornwall) and Kate Thoene (Voorhees/High Bridge, N.J.) to take a 26-25 edge in the second before Woodcome set Thoene for an attack that would claim the Bombers the second set.

LVC took the third as it jumped out to a 10-6 lead which it improved upon for a 17-11 advantage. The Bombers brought the game within three at 20-17, but the Dutchmen tallied five of the final eight points for a 2-1 series advantage.

The Blue & Gold answered with a 25-20 set of its own highlighted by an 11-3 run for a 14-7 lead. Ithaca maintained the seven-point spread with a 21-14 lead before Lebanon Valley brought the match to 23-20. A Chelsea Hayes (Northern Valley Regional/Haworth, N.J.) kill and a Dutchman attack error sent the match to five.

Lebanon Valley ran away with the fifth and final set, 15-5.

Woodcome tallied a career-best 44 assists in the match, while senior Jessica Hoeffner (Hauppauge/Hauppauge) recorded 11 kills and Hayes 10. Hoeffner also had a team-high 18 digs.

The day's second match was tied on 15 occasions, though the Brewers claimed the contest, 3-0. After taking the first set, 25-20, Vassar used a 6-1 run to close out the second set in the same fashion, 25-20. Ithaca looked to surge mid-way through the third to knot the match at 15-15, but Vassar scored 10 of the final 14 points to end the match in straight sets.

Woodcome dished out 21 assists against the Brewers, while Hayes recorded a team-best nine kills and Thoene added seven. Edsall and junior Marissa Weil (Corning West/Corning) each finished the match with three blocks.

The Bombers will next face Rutgers-Newark in the first round of the Bomber Invitational at 3 p.m. on Sept. 9.
