Bombers Open Season with Split at Red Dragon Classic

Cortland, N.Y. -- The Ithaca volleyball team (1-1) opened its 2011 campaign splitting a pair of matches at the Cortland Red Dragon Classic on Friday night. Ithaca played to a 3-1 (20-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-23) victory in comeback fashion to defeat PSU-Behrend (0-1) before dropping a 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-20) match to Skidmore (1-0). The Bombers will return to action Saturday at noon against Lebanon Valley.

After dropping the match's opening set, Ithaca rallied from 9-7 deficit to notch five consecutive points as senior Elizabeth Previte (Hunterdon Central/Flemington, N.J.) held serve in the second game. The Lions fought back within one before the Bombers again tallied five straight scores helping to knot the series at 1-1.

Behrend got off to a commanding 13-6 lead in the third, but the Bombers answered with a 13-6 run to bring the game to a 19-19 stalemate. Ithaca outlasted the Lions for a 26-24 victory.

The Blue & Gold continued its dominance in the fourth and final set to claim the match. Battling for the lead throughout the period, Ithaca chipped away at a 22-18 deficit, winning six unanswered points, to propel to victory.

Seniors Jessica Hoeffner (Hauppauge/Hauppauge) and Chelsea Hayes (Northern Valley Regional/Haworth, N.J.) recorded 19 and 15 kills, respectively, while sophomore Nicki Readie (Pascack Hills/Montvale, N.J.) dug out 41 times. Junior Marissa Woodcome (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford) tallied 41 assists for the Bombers.

In the night's second match, Ithaca fell behind as Skidmore took an early double-digit, 11-point lead, 14-3. Ithaca fought to bring the match within three, 18-15, though the Thoroughbreds outlasted the Bombers with a 7-5 run to claim the first.

Skidmore went on to take the second 25-15. Ithaca held a slight advantage early in the third stanza, but the Thoroughbreds rewrote a three-point shortage to take the third, 25-20, and the match, 3-0.

Hoeffner had 11 kills in the latter match, while senior Kate Thoene (Voorhees/High Bridge, N.J.) added eight and Hayes seven. Woodcome again led the Bombers' setting efforts with 29 assists and Readie contributed 17 digs.
