Ithaca Volleyball Uses Strong Fourth-Set Run to Propel Past Geneseo, 3-1

Box Score

Geneseo, N.Y. – The Bomber (7-6) volleyball team used a commanding 15-2 fourth-set run to collect a 3-1 (25-14, 25-17, 24-26, 25-9) victory at Geneseo (5-10) on Tuesday evening.

A number of Bombers posted strong numbers in the match including three with double-digit kills and two with 10-plus digs.

Junior Chelsea Hayes (Northern Valley Regional/Haworth, N.J.) led Ithaca with 11 kills and juniors Karin Edsall (Cornwall Central/Cornwall) and Kate Thoene (Voorhees/High Bridge, N.J.) each tallied 10, while freshman Sydney Folk (Long Beach/Long Beach) supported their efforts posting 37 assists.

Senior Taylor Horton (Lakeridge/Lake Oswego, Ore.) racked up 23 digs and sophomore Marissa Woodcome (Pittsford-Sutherland/Pittsford), 15. In addition, Thoene notched eight assists (one solo, seven assists) and Edsall, four (1 solo, four assists).

An ace off the fingertips of senior Tina Orlandini (Flintridge Sacred Heart/Altadena, Calif.) gave Ithaca its largest lead of the first set at 9-4 before a Woodcome ace instated a 13-6 point differential forcing a Blue Knights timeout. The Bombers maintained the lead and went on to take the first game, 25-14.

Set two was knotted on several occasions before a trio of aces helped the Bombers to a solid 14-9 cushion. Riddled by service errors on both behalves, the score remained close until the Bombers went on an 8-3 run to outlast Geneseo for a 25-17 second-set triumph.

In the third stanza, Geneseo dominated play. The set was tied at 5-5 before the Blue Knights went on to lead by as many as four points, 16-12. Ithaca surged to knot the game at 22 on Edsall's serve forcing a Geneseo timeout. The home squad returned to the court to tally a point, but the Bombers tied it up before earning match-point at 24-23. Again the lead flip-flopped and Geneseo held on to edge Ithaca, 26-24, in the third frame.

The Bombers opened the fourth set with a 5-0 run, but the Blue Knights inched their way back into contention bringing the score to a 5-5 stalemate. Ithaca went on to gain control using a 15-2 run to its advantage and forcing its opponent's lowest point total of the season, 25-9.

Ithaca will next travel to RIT to tip-off conference play at the Empire 8 Crossover on Sept. 25-26.
