Baseball Hammers New Paltz for Fifth Straight Win

Trevor Wolf had three hits and struck out four batters

New Paltz, N.Y.--The Bombers (11-11, New York Region) trounced New Paltz (15-9) 13-3 Thursday afternoon. Junior David Ahonen (Victor/Farmington) and freshman Sean Weber (East Schodack/Columbia) each hit home runs in the win, with Weber driving in a career-high four runs.

The Bombers collected 16 hits in the game, their second-highest total of the season. Weber and junior Trevor Wolf (Lansing/Freeville) each had three hits, while Ahonen, senior Mike Armstrong (Penfield/Penfield) and freshman Matt Keller (Pelham/Pelham) all had two-hit games. The only Bomber starter not to pick up at least one hit was senior #T.J. Abone# (Rome Free Academy/Rome), who both scored and drove in a run.

Ithaca got on the board early, plating six unearned runs in the first. After two quick outs, Abone reached base on a dropped third strike. Back-to-back hit batsmen loaded the bases for Weber, who cleared the bases on a three-run double. Keller and sophomore Russ Martens (Avon/Avon, Conn.) followed with consecutive two-base hits, and Armstrong closed the inning's scoring with an RBI single.

The Bombers loaded the bases again the third, with Abone driving in a run on a sacrifice fly and Ahonen following with a three-run homer. Weber's shot came as he led off the fourth inning.

Junior Aaron Sapp (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) picked up his first win of the season after allowing just one run over three innings. He struck out one and allowed just three hits. Over his first 25.2 innings pitched, Sapp has struck out 18 batters and walked just seven.

Junior lefthander Bryan Thyroff (Pittsford Mendon/Pittsford) followed Sapp with four innings of relief. He surrendered one run on six hits and struck out three. Wolf pithced the final two frames and struck out four hawks.

Ithaca returns to action Saturday, when they host Empire 8 rival RIT in a doubleheader.
