Washington & Jefferson Upends Ithaca Field Hockey

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca field hockey team (5-8, 2-3 Empire 8) dropped an Empire 8 game 5-2 to visiting Washington & Jefferson (11-3, 4-1 Empire 8) Saturday at Higgins Stadium. The Bombers scored a goal in each half and will continue their season Tuesday with a non-conference game at Geneseo.

After the Presidents built a 1-0 lead, the Bombers rallied to tie in the first half on a slick offensive move through the middle of the field. Junior forward Heather Kozimor (Hackettstown/Vienna, N.J.) controlled the ball and made a diagonal pass to sophomore forward Julia Conroy (Westfield/Westfield, N.J.) that beat a defender, and allowed Conroy to carry the ball around the W&J goalkeeper and score into a yawning net.

Ithaca's second-half goal was scored off of a penalty corner. Senior midfielder Katherine Brown (Akron/Akron) controlled the ball at the top of the circle and her hard shot was tipped in front by sophomore midfielder Tracy Rivas (East Meadow/East Meadow) past the Washington & Jefferson goalkeeper. It was the team-leading seventh goal of the year for Rivas.

Prior to the game, Ithaca honored five seniors who played their last regular-season home game Saturday. They are Brown, defender Cathlin Fitzgerald (Kingsway Regional/Logan Township, N.J.), defender Key Fox (Hunterdon Central/Solebury, Pa.), midfielder Laura Murphy (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) and defender Mia Muzio (Rockport/Rockport, Mass.).

Sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Singleton (Irondequoit/Rochester) made 16 saves in 53 minutes of action. Sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Grassi (Rondout Valley/Kerhonkson) played the final 17 minutes and made two saves. Muzio made a defensive save.
