ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Ithaca (15-11) volleyball team claimed a 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 21-25, 25-17) victory from visiting Oneonta (11-16) on senior night in Ben Light Gymnasium on Tuesday evening. With the victory, the Bombers earned a 2-1 2010 series victory over the Red Dragons.
Ithaca recorded a pair of 25-23 victories to take an early 2-0 lead before Oneonta forced the match to four sets with a 25-21 third-set edge. The Bombers rallied back for a commanding 25-17 fourth-set victory to send seniors
Taylor Horton (Lakeridge/Lake Oswego, Ore.) and
Tina Orlandini (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy/Altadena, Calif.) out in style.
The first set featured an early 7-3 Ithaca lead before the Red Dragons knotted the frame at 10. Oneonta surged ahead for a late 21-18 advantage, but the Bombers outlasted the visitors, 7-2, down the stretch the claim the first set.
Similar to the first stint of action, the second opened with a Bomber run. Ithaca led 6-1 before the Red Dragons scored three unanswered to bring the game within two. The Bombers tallied seven consecutive points mid-set for a 17-11 cushion and held off an attacking Oneonta for a second, 25-23, victory.
The third set went the way of Oneonta after jumping out to a 7-1 lead. Though the Red Dragons never trailed, Ithaca was able to deadlock the set at 18-18, but four unanswered Oneonta points helped the Red Dragons claim the third set, 25-21.
With the score tied five times early in the fourth set, Ithaca pulled ahead of a 7-7 stalemate to outscore the Red Dragons, 18-10, for the 25-17 victory.
Juniors
Kate Thoene (Voorhees/High Bridge, N.J.) and
Jessica Hoeffner (Hauppauge/Hauppauge) led the offense with 13 and 12 kills, respectively, while juniors
Chelsea Hayes (Northern Valley Regional/Haworth, N.J.) and
Karin Edsall (Cornwall Central/Cornwall) each added nine. Sophomore
Marissa Woodcome (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford) and freshman
Sydney Folk (Long Beach/Long Beach) split setting duties on the night.
Woodcome recorded a match-high 21 assists and
Folk dished out 14.
Horton, who ranks 10th all-time at Ithaca with 182 career aces, led the match with four.
Ranking third all-time at Ithaca will 1,732 digs,
Orlandini led the Bombers with 10, while
Horton added nine. Defensively
Thoene also stood strong for Ithaca, notching five blocks (four solo, one assist) to lead the home squad.
The Bombers will next face Hartwick at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22 when they host the second Empire 8 Crossover.
