Baseball Holds Off Montclair State

Healy has 24 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings this season.

Montclair, N.J.--Ithaca, ranked 17th in the nation by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and 19th by D3baseball.com, defeated Montclair State (25-16) Saturday afternoon. Freshman Tucker Healy (Needham/Needham, Mass.) picked up his fifth save of the season, pitching the final 2 1/3 innings for the Bombers (29-7).

Healy entered in the seventh inning with two outs and two men on, with Montclair having already scored three runs in the frame. The Red Hawks loaded the bases on an instance of catcher's interference before Healy got a groundout to end the threat. He allowed just two singles, and struck out three batters.

Junior Tom Fishback (Penfield/Webster) picked up the win to improve to 8-4 on the season. He struck out three men in 3 2/3 innings.

The Bombers got on the board with an unearned run in the fifth inning. Junior catcher Mike Armstrong (Penfield/Penfield) reached base on an error and, after moving up a single from senior Matt Samela (Staples/Westport, Conn.), scored on a second Montclair miscue.

Ithaca scored its other three runs in the seventh, again taking advantage of the Red Hawk defense. Junior #T.J. Abone# (Rome Free Academy/Rome) and senior Alan Kartholl (John Jay Fishkill) hit back-to-back single to open the inning. After an Ithaca strike out, the pair pulled off a double steal to move up to second and third. Montclair committed an infield error on a ball hit by Samela, scoring both Abone and Kartholl.

Samela plated the winning run, moving from second to home on a pair of Montclair wild pitches. With a hit and walk in the game, he was the only Bomber to reach base more than once.

The two teams play again Sunday, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
