Cortland Rallies to Knock Out Ithaca

Alan Kartholl drove in the game's first run with an RBI double.

Farmingdale, N.Y..--Cortland (31-13) eliminated Ithaca (29-10) from the NCAA playoffs Thursday, scoring twice in the bottom of the eight en route to a 3-2 win. The Bombers had held the lead since the seventh inning, when sophomore Trevor Wolf (Freeville/Lansing) hit his first career home run to break a 1-1 tie.

The Red Dragons scored the game-tying run with two outs in the eighth on a wild pitch. They plated the winning run on a bunt single to second, with the runner just beating the Bombers' throw.

Wolf's homer, a line drive to right, came with one out in the seventh. It was the eighth extra base hit of the season for Wolf, who went 2-for-3 against Cortland.

The Bombers scored the game's first run in the top of the fourth. With one out sophomore third baseman David Ahonen (Victor/Farmington) looped a single to centerfield. After a strikeout, senior Alan Kartholl (John Jay/Fishkill) lined a double to the right field gap to put Ithaca up 1-0.

The score remained 1-0 until the Red Dragons put up a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score.

Wolf and Ahonen each collected a pair of hits in the game. Wolf also drew a walk in the game.

Junior Tom Fishback (Penfield/Webster) started the game foe the Bombers. He threw 7.2 innings, allowing just two earned runs and eight hits. He struck out four and walked two. Fishback ends the season with a 2.73 ERA, 82.1 innings pitched, 56 strikeouts and eight wins. All four figures were team-bests.
