Farmingdale, N.Y.--The Bombers fell to Western New England (30-15) 16-5 to open play at the NCAA Championship New York Regional, held at Farmingdale. Ithaca (29-9) will face Cortland at noon Thursday in an elimination game.
The Golden Bears scored the game's first 10 runs. Ithaca got on the board with two runs in the fourth inning. Sophomore outfielder Matt Streich (East Greenwich/East Greenwich, R.I.) hit an RBI double in the frame, with fellow sophomore Rob Zappia (Greece Athena/Rochester) driving in the team's second run on a single. Zappia drove in another run in the sixth.
The Bombers scored their final two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Pinch-hitter Mike Becker (Mount Anthony/Benington, Vt.) drove in sophomore Shane Wolf (Lansing/Freeville) on a double, and scored himself on a passed ball.
Wolf and Zappia each had a pair of hits for Ithaca. All nine starters reached base at least once.
On Thursday, Ithaca will face Cortland for the third time this season, having split the last two matchups with the Red Dragons. The Bombers won the last game between the two, an 8-0 win at Freeman Field. Ithaca had 14 hits in that game, including three from senior Kurt Bednarcyk (Fairport/Fairport).
