Montclair State Rallies to Knock off Baseball

Aaron Sapp threw five shutout innings.

Montclair, N.J.--The Montclair State Red Hawks (26-16) scored five runs over the game's final four innings to edge Ithaca 5-4 Sunday afternoon, the final regular season contest for the Bombers (29-8). Ithaca had nine hits in the game, including three from senior Matt Samela (Staples/Westport, Conn.).

The Red Hawks broke a 4-4 tie in the ninth, scoring an unearned run. The team had scored twice in the eighth to tie the score, plating a run on a wild pitch and the second on a bases-loaded walk.

The Bombers held the early lead in the game, scoring solo runs in the first, fifth, and sixth innings to. Samela lead off the game with a single, moved to second on a groundout, stole third and finally scored on a wild pitch. Samela drove in Ithaca's second run, plating fellow senior Alan Kartholl (John Jay/Fishkill) with a two-out single. Senior Dylan Perez (Conval Regional/Peterborough, N.H.) scored Ithaca's third run. He led off the top of the sixth with a walk and eventually scored on a groundout from freshman Trevor Wolf (Lansing/Freeville).

After a Montclair run in the bottom of the sixth cut the Ithaca lead to two runs, freshman Conor Thompson (West Genesee/Syracuse) scored on a base hit from senior Kurt Bednarcyk (Fairrport/Fairport) to put Ithaca up 4-1. Thompson reached base on a one-out double.

Thompson was 2-for-4 in the contest.

Sophomore Aaron Sapp (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) drew the start for the Bombers. He held the Red Hawks scoreless over five innings and surrendered just one hit. He struck out two batters.
