ITHACA, N.Y.— The Bombers (26-7) edged Oneonta (26-12) 3-2 Wednesday afternoon. The one-run victory comes just two days after Ithaca beat the Red Dragons 15-14 on the road.
Senior Pete MacDaniel (Schuylerville/Gansevoort) dominated on the hill. He went seven innings and allowed just four hits while fanning seven. MacDaniel improves his record to a team-best 8-0. The win is the 13th of MacDaniel's career. Oneonta did not advance a runner past second base against MacDaniel.
The Bombers scored their first run in the sixth. With two outs, junior right fielder #T.J. Abone# (Rome Free Academy/Rome) got an RBI hit, scoring sophomore first baseman Trevor Wolf (Lansing/Freeville) who had reached with a double. Wolf went two-for-three with a walk. He also made a spectacular defensive play in the seventh inning, ranging into right field on a high chopper and relaying to MacDaniel at first.
Ithaca added two insurance runs in the seventh. Senior center fielder Matt Samela (Staples/Westport, Conn.) knocked in the run with a triple to right field. Senior shortstop Kurt Bednarcyk (Fairport/Fairport) drove in Samela with a sacrifice fly. Freshman catcher Connor Thompson (West Genesee/Syracuse) doubled, walked, and scored a run in the contest.
Sophomore Aaron Sapp (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) struck out two batters in an inning of relief. Freshman Tucker Healy (Needham/Needham, Mass.) worked the ninth to pick up his fourth save of the year. The game ended when catcher Mike Armstrong (Penfield/Penfield), who had just entered the game, nailed the potential tying run attempting to steal second.
The Bombers finish their Empire 8 schedule Saturday with a doubleheader against Stevens. The first game begins at 1 p.m. at Freeman Field.
