ITHACA, N.Y.--The Bombers (19-6) shutout Cortland Wednesday afternoon, defeating the 16th-ranked Red Dragons 8-0. The win extended Ithaca's winning streak to seven games and snapped its eight-game losing streak against Cortland (18-10).

The Bombers collected 14 hits against the Red Dragons. Every Ithaca starter reached base at least once.

Ithaca opened the scoring in the fourth inning. Junior right fielder #T.J. Abone# (Rome Free Academy/Rome) led off the frame with a double (his seventh of the season) down the right field line. Sophomore left fielder Rob Zappia (Greece Athena/Rochester) followed with a double to right field. Senior first baseman Alan Kartholl (John Jay/Fishkill) plated Zappia with a single. Kartholl moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman catcher Conor Thompson (West Genesee/Syracuse) and scored on a single by senior center fielder Matt Samela (Staples/Westport, Conn.).

Kartholl picked up his second RBI of the game and ninth of the season in the fifth inning when he drove in sophomore third baseman David Ahonen (Victor/Farmington) with a sacrifice fly.

The Bombers put the game out of reach in the sixth when they scored four more runs. Senior shortstop Kurt Bednarcyk (Fairport/Fairport) started the rally with a single. He moved to third when senior second baseman Dylan Perez (Conval Regional/Peterborough, N.H.) singled. Ahonen knocked in Bednarcyk with a single. Sophomore designated hitter Matt Streich (East Greenwich/East Greenwich, R.I.) knocked in Perez with a double to deep right field. Streich leads the club with 24 RBI. Ahonen and Streich tacked on the final runs on a Cortland error. Ahonen's 18 runs scored puts him one behind Samela for the team-lead.

Bednarcyk finished the game with three hits. Samela, Perez, Zappia, and Kartholl each had a multi-hit game.

On the mound, four Bombers combined to shutout Cortland on just six hits. Senior Pete MacDaniel (Schuylerville/Gansevoort) started the game by giving up a single. The Cortland base runner was quickly erased when Thompson caught him attempting to steal second.

Junior Tom Fishback (Penfield/Webster) cruised through four innings in relief of MacDaniel to pick up his fifth win of the year. Fishback allowed just one hit and struck out five. Fishback now has 31 strike outs in a team-high 49 innings.

Sophomore Aaron Sapp (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) made his third relief appearance. He pitched two frames, gave up one hit, and struck out one. Freshman Tucker Healy (Needham/Needham, Mass.) threw a perfect ninth to preserve the shutout.

Ithaca next hosts St. John Fisher for a set of weekend doubleheaders. Game one Saturday starts at 1 p.m.
