Ithaca Sweeps Doubleheader

Matt Streich drove in three runs in game two.

Rome, N.Y.--Ithaca extended its season-best winning streak to six with a pair of wins over Utica Saturday afternoon. The Bombers (18-5, 9-1 Empire 8) won the first game 3-1 and came back with a 9-4 win in game two against the Pioneers (2-13, 0-6 Empire 8).

The Bombers broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of runs in the seventh inning of game one. Seniors Matt Samela (Staples/Westport, Conn.) and Kurt Bednarcyk (Fairport/Fairport) hit doubles to open the inning. Bednarcyk then stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly from sophomore David Ahonen (Victor/Farmington).

Junior Tom Fishback (Penfield/Webster) pitched a complete game for the Bombers. He allowed five hits and struck out six.

The Bombers scored all nine of their second game runs in the first three innings. Samela, who went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and three runs batted in, led off the game with a walk and scored on a double from sophomore Matt Streich (East Greenwich/East Greenwich, R.I.).

Ithaca scored six times in third, taking advantage of an error and a hit by pitch. Junior catcher Conor Thompson (Penfield/Penfield) drove in two runs with a single. Ahonen and Streich each hit run-scoring doubles. Streich knocked in three runs in the game.

Sophomore Dan Lynch (Williamsville South/East Amherst) moved to 3-2 on the season with the win. He held Utica to two runs over five innings.

The Bombers return to Freeman Field Wednesday with a 4 p.m. game against Cortland.
