Hoboken, N.J. -- The men's tennis team (13-3, 6-0 Empire 8) took over sole possession of first place atop the Empire 8 standings by beating host Stevens 6-3 Friday. The Bombers can clinch the top seed in the Empire 8 Championship Tournament by winning either of their final two conference matches.
The Bombers, who won for the 10th time in 11 outings, took a 2-1 lead after doubles play and clinched the victory by winning the first three contested singles matches.
Sophomore Josh Rifkin (Homestead/Fort Wayne, N.J.) remained unbeaten in singles play -- raising his record to 15-0 -- by rallying for a three-set win at second singles. Junior Taylor Borda (West Morris-Mendham/Chester, N.J.), now 11-3 on the season, maintained his perfect conference record with a straight-set win at first singles.
Junior Danny Wolk (Field School/Potomac, Md.) and freshman Dan Levine (Monroe-Woodbury) recorded wins at fourth and sixth singles, respectively. Wolk, 8-4 and 5-0 in Empire 8 play, rallied after dropping the first set and Levine won in straight sets.
Borda and Rifkin won at first doubles to improve to 13-2 overall and 6-0 against Empire 8 opposition. Freshman Jimmy Newton (Florida Virtual School/Englewood, Fla.) and Wolk were winners at second doubles.
Ithaca continues Empire 8 play Tuesday, playing at Hartwick.
