Defense Carries #4 Men's Lacrosse to Win

Michael Serron had a career-high six ground balls and caused three turnovers.

ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 4 Ithaca men's lacrosse team (7-0, 1-0 Empire 8) held Alfred (5-1, 0-1 Empire 8) to the lowest offensive output of any Bomber opponent this year in an 8-3 victory Wednesday at Upper Terrace Field. The Bombers outshot Alfred 49-17 and held a 49-21 advantage in ground balls.

Senior defender Michael Serron (Canandaigua Academy/Canandaigua) helped at the defensive end by picking up a career-high six ground balls and forcing three turnovers. Senior defender Neth Wiedemann (Episcopal School/Dallas, Texas) also had six ground balls and caused four turnovers. Sophomore goalie David Gal (Loomis Chaffee [Conn.]/Amherst, Mass.) made seven saves in the game.

Ithaca dominated possession by winning 12 of 15 face offs in the game. Sophomore Michael Hennessy (Owen J. Roberts/Spring City) was 7-2 and junior Nick Neuman (Madison West/Madison, Wis.) was 5-1 at the X.

Senior attackman Alec Siefert (Duxbury/Duxbury, Mass.) and freshman attackman Tom Mongelli (Kinnelon/Kinnelon, N.J.) each had a goal and an assist. Sophomore midfielder Mike Silipo (Williston Northampton/Deerfield, Mass.) also scored twice. His two goals were a career high.

Ithaca returns to action Saturday at 1p.m. when the Bombers host Maritime.
