Chestertown, Md.--The Bombers (7-3) scored twice in the 10th inning to defeat Washington (Md.) 9-7 Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Dan Lynch (Williamsville South/East Amherst) picked up the win after pitching five shutout relief innings against the Shoremen (6-5).
With one out in the 10th, Ithaca got four straight walks from junior Brian Grastorf (Niskayuna/Rexford), freshman Conor Thompson (West Genesee/Syracuse), senior Matt Samela (Staples/Westport, Conn.) and senior Kurt Bednarcyk (Freeport/Freeport). Bednarcyk drove in his career-high fourth run of the game with his bases-loaded walk. Senior Dylan Perez (Conval Regional/Peterborough, N.H.), who also drove in four runs, tacked on an insurance run in the inning with an RBI groundout.
Lynch pitched a perfect bottom of the 10th to preserve the victory, the Bombers third in a row. In his five innings of work he allowed just two hits and struck out three. The win raised his season record to 2-1.
The Bombers jumped out to a 6-1 lead with three runs each in the second and third innings. In the second, Bednarcyk had a run-scoring groundout and Perez drove in two with an opposite field single. Thompson drove in senior Alan Kartholl (John Jay/Fishkill) on a sacrifice fly in the fourth, with Bednarcyk driving in a pair on a single up the middle.
After the Shoremen scored six times in the third and fourth to take a 7-6 lead, an RBI groundout from Perez tied the score in the sixth inning.
Seven Bombers picked up a hit in the game, with Kartholl and sophomore Matt Streich (East Greenwich/East Greenwich, R.I.) hitting doubles.
Ithaca continues play Sunday with a 1 p.m. game at DeSales.
