Los Angeles, Calif.--Making his first career start, sophomore righthander Aaron Sapp (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) pitched a complete game shutout against Occidental (9-10). Fellow sophomore David Ahonen (Victor/ Farmington) to led the offense for the Bombers (2-1).
The Tigers picked up just four hits against Sapp, including just two in the game's final four innings. Sapp, who made five relief appearances as a freshman, is the first Bomber to pitch a regular-season nine-inning shutout since 2007.
After being held scoreless for the first four innings, Ithaca broke through in the fifth inning with an unearned run. Senior second baseman Dylan Perez (Conval Regional/Peterborough, N.H.) reached on an infield error to lead off the inning. He moved into scoring position on a steal of second, and scored on a single from senior first baseman Alan Kartholl (John Jay/Fishkill).
Occidental threatened to tie the score in the bottom of the inning, getting runners to second and third with one out. The runner at third ran home on a ground ball, but was caught in a rundown for the innings second out. After a hit batsmen loaded the bases, Sapp induced a groundout to preserve the shutout.
The Bombers tacked on three insurance runners in the eighth. Entering as a pinch hitter, junior Dan D'Angelo (Sparta/Sparta, N.J.) led off the frame with a single up the middle. After stealing second base, D'Angelo was driven in on an RBI single from Ahonen. Sophomore Matt Streich (East Greenwich/East Greenwich, R.I.) and Perez added run-scoring base hits of their own in the inning.
Ithaca returns to the field Wednesday at Chapman. The game will begin at 5:30 p.m. EST.
