ITHACA, N.Y. – The women's soccer team (11-3-0, 8-0-0 Empire 8), ranked 19th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and 21st by D3soccer.com, beat Utica (4-11-3, 2-5-0 Empire 8) Wednesday. The win secured an 8-0-0 Empire 8 record for the Bombers for the second time in three years; Ithaca is the only conference school to post an unbeaten, untied record through eight games since the league expanded to nine teams.
Senior Amy Scheffer (Schalmont/Schenectady) scored twice in the final 10 minutes. Despite holding a 34-4 advantage in shots, the Bombers rallied to break three ties. The visiting Pioneers tied the game at 1-1 and 2-2 before Scheffer's first goal of the game – a header assisted by senior Liz Masucci (New Providence/New Providence, N.J.) – put Ithaca ahead to stay.
Scheffer added her team-best 13th goal of the season in the final minute, converting a pass from freshman Julie Winn (Sutton/Sutton, Mass.). Scheffer's 13 goals this fall match the program's sixth-highest single-season total and she ranks second all-time at Ithaca in both goals (35) and points (90).
After a scoreless first half, the Bombers took their first lead on a goal by freshman Rachael Palladino (Lansing/Groton) in the 54th minute. Winn, who has now collected nine points, assisted on the goal. Palladino's goal was her 10th, tying Ithaca's freshman record set by Chelsey Feldman in 2005. With 24 points, Palladino is three away from tying another of Feldman's Ithaca freshman marks.
After the Pioneers tied the score on their first shot of the game, which deflected off an Ithaca defender, the Bombers retook the lead on the first goal of the season by senior #Winnie Adrien# (Blairstown Academy/Selden). Adrien, playing in just her fourth game, carried a pass from senior Emily Mogk (Bozeman/Bozeman, Mont.) and put a shot past Utica's charging keeper. Mogk leads Ithaca with seven assists.
Junior Jessica Platt (Monument Mountain/New Marlborough, Mass.), who made one save, earned the win – her first of the season – while making her second collegiate start.
The Bombers play at Plattsburgh Saturday at noon.
