Utica, N.Y. -- The field hockey team (4-9, 2-3 Empire 8) rallied to beat host Utica (7-5, 3-2 Empire 8) 2-1 Saturday. Ithaca scored twice in the second half and senior Chelsea Welsh (Scotia-Glenville/Scotia) stopped a penalty stroke with 42 seconds left to seal the win.
Junior Laura Murphy (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) and freshman Tracy Rivas (East Meadow/East Meadow) converted rebounds for second-half goals to erase the Pioneers' 1-0 halftime lead.
Welsh, who finished with seven saves, needed three in the final three minutes. The last chance for Utica, who owned a 14-6 advantage in shots, came with 42 seconds left when the Pioneers were awarded a penalty stroke that Welsh saved.
The Bombers host #6 Cortland Wednesday at 4 p.m.
