Rochester Rallies to Defeat Ithaca In Overtime

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca field hockey team (3-9) held a 2-0 halftime lead but lost 3-2 in overtime to Rochester (8-5) Wednesday afternoon at Yavits Field in Ithaca. It was the fourth time in the last five games that Ithaca scored the game's opening goal.

Ithaca took the lead in the seventh minute on an unassisted goal by senior midfielder Annie Onzik (Bishop O'Reilly/Shavertown, Pa.). Onzik shot from approximately eight yards out and beat the Rochester goalkeeper low inside of the left post. It was Onzik's team-leading fifth goal of the season.

The Bombers doubled the lead just before halftime when junior forward Katherine Brown (Akron/Akron) collected a rebound in front of the goal and neatly flipped a shot into the top right corner of the net. Brown leads Ithaca in scoring with four goals and six assists for 14 points.

The Bombers had two great chances to win the game in the closing minutes. A shot from junior midfielder Laura Murphy (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) went just wide of the left post in the final minute of the second half. Ithaca controlled possession in the first minute of the overtime period and earned a penalty corner, but shots by Brown and freshman forward Julia Conroy (Westfield/Westfield, N.J.) were stopped by the Rochester goalkeeper.

Ithaca senior goalkeeper Chelsea Welsh (Scotia-Glenville/Scotia) made 12 saves in the game.

Ithaca returns to Empire 8 play Saturday with a game at Utica at 4:30 p.m.
