#22 Men's Basketball Posts Best Start Ever with 8th Straight Win

Cruz led all scorers with 16 first-half points

St. Lawrence, N.Y. -- The #22 men's basketball team (8-0) posted its best start in school history with a 95-89 road win over the St. Lawrence Saints (4-2) on Saturday. The Bombers passed the 1941-42 Ithaca squad as the only other team to open a season with seven straight wins in the program's history.

The Bombers used 10 three-point field goals in the first half to give themselves a 56-39 advantage at halftime. St. Lawrence put together a 12-0 run from the 15:01 mark to 12:10 in the second half to make the contest a five-point game. The Saints cut the Ithaca lead to one point with 2:55 remaining. Senior guard Sean Burton (Notre Dame/Yorkville) connected on jumpers in consecutive possessions to boost the Bomber lead back to five. Ithaca made clutch free-throw attempts down the stretch to secure the win. The team shot 12-14 from the line for the game.

Burton added eight assists to his 26-point total on 9-20 shooting from the field. Sophomore guard Chris Cruz (West Genesee/Camillus) also shot 45% from the field (9-20) to tally 21 points. Freshman guard Jordan Marcus (Solomon Schechter/West Orange, N.J.) netted a career-high four three-point field goals, all of them coming in the first-half, to tie his career-best point total (12). Marcus and Cruz combined for seven of Ithaca's 10 three-point field goals in the first half.

Senior forward Sean Leahy (West Genesee/Syracuse) scored 15 points and recorded five rebounds. Classmate Jeff Bostic (Geneva/Geneva) tallied eight points and pulled down 16 of the teams 40 rebounds, six of which were on the offensive end.

Following a three-week break, the Bombers will look to extend its winning streak as they begin conference play on the road against Elmira on January 2nd at 8 p.m.
