Record-Setting Bergerstock Leads #21 Bombers To Big Win Over Springfield

Mike Tannenbaum and the rest of Ithaca's seniors made their final regular-season appearance at Butterfield Stadium.
ITHACA, N.Y. - Junior running back Thomas Bergerstock (Webster Thomas/Webster) ran for 175 yards and four touchdowns as the Ithaca Bombers (7-1, 4-1 Empire 8) closed out an undefeated regular season at home, beating visiting the Springfield Pride (2-6, 0-4) 37-8 Saturday. The Bombers can clinch a share of the Empire 8 title with a win at Alfred next week.

Bergerstock raised his season totals to 20 touchdowns and 120 points, breaking school records in both categories. Jeff Wittman's totals of 19 touchdowns and 114 points had stood since 1992.

Bergerstock went over 100 yards in the first quarter, capping Ithaca's first two drives with touchdown runs of 45 and nine yards. He added 14-yard score in the second quarter and tallied the game's final touchdown in the fourth quarter, scoring on a two-yard run.

The Bomber defense held Springfield to 166 rushing yards and eight points. The Pride came in averaging 28 points and 249 rushing yards per game and converted just four-of-17 attempts on third and fourth down.

Senior linebacker Matt Scalice (North Tonawanda/North Tonawanda) led Ithaca with a game-best 11 tackles. Senior linebacker John Scanlon (Amity/Choate Rosemary Hall/Bethany, Conn.) added nine. Both made two tackles for loss. Senior cornerback Jason Chier (Chenango Forks/Binghamton) made six tackles and intercepted a pass. Sophomore defensive end Matt Dibble (Columbia/East Schodack) was in on a career-high three tackles for loss.

Springfield scored its only touchdown after recovering a Bomber fumble at the Ithaca 25-yard line. Freshman quarterback Josh Carter (Marlborough/Marlborough, Mass.) scored on a five-yard run. The Pride added an accidental two-point conversion after trying to kick the extra point; the kick was blocked and caught by sophomore lineman John Barbagallo (St. John's Prep/North Andover, Mass.) for two points.

Carter ran for 75 yards on 18 carries (46 yards came on one play) and threw for 51 yards.

Two Bomber quarterbacks combined to throw for 243 yards. Sophomore Brian Grastorf (Niskayuna/Rexford) completed all six of his throws for a career-best 110 yards in the third and fourth quarters. He threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Kyle Crandall (Herkimer/Herkimer) in the third quarter. Senior Dan Juvan (Dobbs Ferry/Yonkers) threw for 133 yards, completing 10 of 19 passes.

Crandall led all receivers with career-best totals of nine catches and 162 yards.

Junior free safety Jarred Burrell (Pilgrim/Warwick, R.I.) and senior linebacker Tom Caporale (North Valley Demarest/Closter, N.J.) led Springfield with 10 tackles apiece.

Freshman Andrew Rogowski (Canisius/East Amherst) kicked a 22-yard field goal and added extra points after four of Ithaca's five touchdowns.

Ithaca wraps up its conference schedule next week, playing at Alfred.
