Cortland, N.Y.—The Ithaca (11-13) volleyball team fell to neighboring Cortland (16-7) in four sets, 25-17, 25-19, 19-25, 25-19. Both teams wore special pink and white jerseys during the match, as part of the Dig Pink National Breast Cancer Awareness Rally. Many schools nationwide are participating in the event to promote breast health education and raise funds to help end the disease.
The Bombers were led offensively by freshman
Jessica Hoeffner (Hauppauge/Hauppauge) with eight kills. Junior
Corinna Doctor (Skaneateles/Skaneateles) contributed 27 assists, 11 digs, and three aces. Freshman
Kate Thoene (Voorhees/Glen Gardner, N.J.) led the team and set a new career-high with seven blocks.
The Bombers took the third set after jumping out to a 5-1 lead. Though the Red Dragons rallied to within a score at 9-8, a Cortland error and two straight aces from
Doctor extended Ithaca's lead. Cortland pulled the score to within four at 23-19 before Bomber freshman
Karin Edsall (Cornwall Central/Cornwall) put down two straight kills in the middle of the Red Dragon court to give the final two points to Ithaca.
Ithaca could not gather enouhg momentum to take the lead in the final match, and a late rally could not get the team closer than 22-17.
After falling behind 4-0 in the first set, the Bombers came back to take a 9-8 lead. Ithaca played Cortland to a tie as late as 13-13, but could not hold off the Red Dragon rally that closed the set.
Cortland took leads of 6-1 and 7-2 in the second set, but Ithaca again rallied taking a 9-8 lead with Brianna D'Errico
(Byron/Byron-Bergen) serving. The senior picked up two aces and was helped by a block from
Doctor and
Thoene. The Red Dragons retook the lead with seven straight points, but the Bombers again rallied, getting within a point at 19-18 on a block from
Thoene and fellow freshman
Elizabeth Previte (Hunterdon/Flemington, N.J.) and tying the score on a Cortland error. The Bombers never reclaimed the lead, however, with Cortland scoring the second set's final six points.
The Bombers return to action Friday at the Union Invitational. They play Empire 8 rival Hartwick at 4 p.m.
