ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's track & field team earned 18 points on the second day of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships at St. John Fisher University to move into second place in the team standings. IC received a national championship performance from
Meghan Matheny in the pole vault and a national runner-up showing from
Logan Bruce in the heptathlon.
Logan Bruce completed the second day of the heptathlon and finished as the national runner-up with a school record total of 5220. Bruce finishes off her career with her seventh All-American performance and the third time in which she was the national runner-up in the heptathlon or pentathlon.
Bruce entered the second day in the runner-up position and 31 points off the lead. Friday's competition began with the long jump and Bruce scored 792 with a persona best mark of 5.81 meters (19' 0.75") and finished third in the event as she moved within a point of the lead. She then moved over to the javelin and posted a mark of 34.68 meters (113' 9") to earn 566, but now trailed by 67 points heading into the 800-meter run. She clocked a career-best 2:23.15 in the 800 to secure 781 points to remain in her runner-up spot.
She also competed in the 100-meter hurdles prelim and finished 18th overall with a time of 14.64 seconds.
Martha Kemp-Neilson looked to add her career All-American performance but came up just shy and finished in a tie for 10th overall. Kemp-Neilson entered at 3.50 meters (11' 5.75") and cleared on her second try. She then cleared 3.65 meters (11' 11.75") on the first attempt and surpassed 3.80 meters (12' 5.5") on the second run before missing three times at 3.85 meters (12' 7.5").
Kennedey Heichel made her first trip to the NCAA Championships and finished in a tie for 16th in the pole vault. Heichel entered as the 17th seed and cleared 3.50 meters on her first try. She then surpassed 3.65 meters on her second attempt, but her championship came to a close at 3.80 meters (12' 5.5").
