ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team avoided be swept by RIT in a three-game Liberty League series as the Bombers won the backend of Saturday's doubleheader in Rochester by a 4-0 score. RIT won the opener, 4-1. Ithaca is now 15-10 on the season and 6-3 in the Liberty League.
GAME ONE: RIT 4, Ithaca 1
For the second consecutive game, RIT held the IC offense in check and allowed just five hits and one run, which was a solo home run by
Garrett Callaghan in the top of the sixth inning.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run double and then extended their lead to 3-0 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly.
Between the first and fifth innings, IC could only manage to place two runners into scoring position.
After the Callaghan homer in the top of the sixth, RIT tacked on another run in the bottom half after a lead off double scored following consecutive errors by the IC defense.
Kyle Lambert took the loss in a complete game effort with 11 strikeouts.
GAME TWO: Ithaca 4, RIT 0
Matt Chase provided the spark IC needed in the series as he shut RIT down with a tremendous eight-inning outing with seven strikeouts and five hits allowed.
The Bombers went up, 2-0, in the third on an RBI ground-rule double from Callaghan, which brought in
Mike Nauta, and then Nichols Cutaia drove in
Louis Fabbo with a ground out.
Ryan Laubscher then extended IC's lead to 3-0 in the fifth with an RBI base hit to left that pushed home Callaghan. Laubscher tacked on another run for the Bombers in the seventh with another RBI single to plate Cutaia.
The Bombers will return to Rochester on Wednesday for a non-conference game at 3:30 p.m. against St. John Fisher.
