ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team took the season series against the University of Rochester as the Bombers prevailed, 7-5, in 11 innings at Towers Field on Sunday afternoon. The victor elevates IC's overall record to 10-7 and 2-1 in the Liberty League.
Ethan Rothstein provided the game-winning hit for the Bombers with his two-run, opposite field home run in the top of the 11th inning to give IC a 7-5 advantage. It was Rothstein's second home run of the day and third this week. He also homered in the eight inning to tie the game at 3-3 with a solo shot.
Ithaca took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run triple off the bat of
Connor Pedersen, which brought home
Louis Fabbo and
Garrett Callaghan. Rochester would tie things up, 2-2, in the bottom of the fourth on RBI single and error.
The Yellowjackets then took a 3-2 lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, but Rothstein's round-tripper once again knotted the score in the eighth.
Rochester had a chance to win the game in the ninth with two runners on and one out, but a base running mistake between third and home sent the game into extra innings.
IC plated two runs in the 10th inning on a bases loaded, two-run single from
Matt Curtis that brought in Fabbo and
Riley Brawdy. Rochester would score twice in the bottom of the 10th to continue the game as an error allowed the first run to score and then a sacrifice fly tied the score at 5-5.
In the 11th,
Ryan Laubscher reached on a one-out double and Rothstein followed with the home run to right field.
Rochester's comeback bid came to an end in the bottom half of the inning as a 3-6 double play ended the game.
Landon White earned the victory in 2.0 innings of relief with three strikeouts.
Garrett Bell started on the mound for IC and tossed 5.1 innings with three strikeouts and two unearned runs allowed on four hits.
Matt Chase accounted for the other 3.2 innings pitched and he also struck out three batters.
Fabbo went 3-for-6 with two runs scored, while Rothstein was 2-for-5.
Ithaca is back in action on Tuesday, March 28 for a non-conference matchup at Hamilton College.
