ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Ithaca College field hockey team bested SUNY Cortland for the second time in two weeks this Saturday afternoon, defeating the Red Dragons 5-1 in the quarterfinal round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division III Field Hockey Championships. Â
Senior forward Cathy Foto (West Hartford, Conn.) recorded her second hat trick of the week, netting three goals, bringing her season total to 31. Senior link Mary Klecha (Greene) also tallied two assists in the win.Â
Sophomore forward Tracey Moyer (New Hope, Pa.) notched Ithaca's first goal of the game less than two minutes into regulation play, her fifth of the season.
Foto doubled the Bombers' lead just three minutes later off assists from Klecha and junior forward Linda Amuso (Mt. Kisco).Â
Jamie Partigianoni opened up scoring for the Red Dragons in the 10th minute of the first half, cutting the Bombers lead to 3-1.Â
Amuso wrapped up IC's scoring at 4-1 in the first half just 14 minutes into play. Sophomore halfback Patty Brady (Sea Cliff) recorded the assist on Ithaca's third goal of the game, her third of the season.Â
Ithaca outshot Cortland 20 to 5 in just the first half of play. The Bombers also drew 15 penalty corners compared to the Red Dragon's three.Â
Foto notched her second goal of the game 13 minutes into the second half off an assist from Klecha. The assist marks Klecha's 22nd of the season, a team statistical leader.Â
With 50 seconds left in regulation, Foto netted an unassisted goal to seal the win for the Bombers at 5-1.Â
Freshman goaltender Karen Howarth (Menham, N.J.) recorded five saves in the contest while Cortland registered 24.Â
IC outshot the Red Dragons once again in the second half, 14 to 2. Ithaca also drew 13 more corner penalties than their opponents in the final 35 minutes of play.Â
The Bombers improve to 16-3 on the season with the win. Ithaca will take on Franklin and Marshall College in the semifinal round of the NCAA tournament next Friday, November 19th in Elizabethtown, Pa.Â
