Second Half Push Lifts Men’s Basketball Past Cortland, 72-63

ITHACA, N.Y. – In the first game inside Ben Light Gymnasium since February 25, 2020, the Ithaca College men's basketball team did not disappoint the Bomber faithful, as Ithaca posted a 72-63 comeback victory over SUNY Cortland in the team's home opener of the 2021-22 season on November 17. The Bombers are now 2-1 in the early season, while Cortland falls to 1-2.

Ithaca trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half, 36-25 with 2:31 to go, but the Bombers ended the half on a 6-2 run to go intermission down by seven. Cortland came out strong to begin the second half and build a 49-36 lead with 16:01 to play after a 3-pointer.

Over the next eight minutes, the Bombers erased their deficit and took a 56-55 lead with 8:41 to go on a Luka Radovich 3-pointer. During the 20-7 run, Radovich and Zach Warech each scored five points, while Skylar Sinon had four, while Triston Wennersten hit a three, Andrew Geschickter scored on a fastbreak, and Alex Barron made one at the free throw line.

After Cortland regained the lead on the next possession, IC used a bucket from Warech and a three-point play from George Sikoryak III to establish a 61-57 edge with 6:15 remaining, and IC never trailed again.

Sikoryak then extended IC's lead to seven points at 67-60 after back-to-back layups with just over a minute to go. Sinon put the game away with five made free throws over the final 40 seconds and the Bombers wrapped up the 72-63 triumph.

IC shot just 33.3-percent in the first half (11-for-33) but responded with a 46.3% clip (13-for-28) in the second half. The Bombers did, however, made eight 3-pointers over the opening 20 minutes to stay in the contest. The Bombers also utilized 17 offensive rebounds to account for 12 second-chance points.

Warech led the way with a double-double, scoring 16 points on 6-of 10 shooting (4-of-7 from three) with 10 rebounds. Radovich tallied 12 points, while Sinon just missed a triple-double with 12 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

Sikoryak added nine points, while Geschickter chipped in seven points and Liam Spellman had six points. Barron ripped down six rebounds and Logan Wendell notched five points.

The Bomber travel to Susquehanna University on Saturday, November 20 for a 2 p.m. non-conference matchup. IC will then hit the road for its first Liberty League weekend at Vassar College and Bard College on December 3-4.
