Four Ithaca Gymnasts Named NCGA Senior Scholar All-Americans

NCGA Release

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) published its annual academic honors on Monday afternoon. The Ithaca College women's gymnastics team was well-represented in the announcement with all four of the program's eligible senior gymnasts – Paige Landes, Cassidy Marquette, Emily Szembrot, and Baylie Trammell - honored as NCGA Scholar All-Americans.

Traditionally, the NCGA's presentation of Scholar All-Americans has come during the awards presentation at the NCGA National Championships. Unfortunately, with the announced cancellation of the NCGA East Regional Championships and the NCGA National Championships due to the developing situation with COVID-19, the association switched gears to move up the timeline for the announcement. For a second consecutive year, IC had four gymnasts who earned the fantastic honor, as IC's group of seniors have been impeccable achievers both in the gym and in the classroom throughout their respective collegiate careers.

In total, 51 student-athletes across the association's 14 member institutions were recognized in the release. The number marked a six-gymnast increase over last season. In order to earn All-America recognition, gymnasts must have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 throughout their collegiate career, while they must also be an active competitor in their senior season of academic and athletic eligibility. All four of Ithaca's graduating Class of 2020 members not only met those standards, but greatly exceeded them to become NCGA Academic All-Americans.

Ithaca's senior class had been pivotal leaders in the lineup during the 2020 season. Landes was a steady contributor on beam, ranking second on the team with a season average of 9.538, while she emerged into a big player on floor exercise ranking third-best on the team and setting new personal highs several times en route to a 9.600 season average in that event. Marquette was a big player in three events on vault, beam, and floor exercise. The vault was where she really thrived, ranking tops on the team and in a tie for fifth-best nationally with a 9.681 average. She also was strong on beam and floor, posting season averages of 9.169 and 9.531, respectively. Szembrot was a two-event contributor on beam and floor, scoring averages of 9.296 and 9.494, respectively. Trammell saw action in three total events, with her main impact felt on vault and floor exercise where she scored averages of 9.419 and 9.531, respectively.

The senior group has accumulated six commendations on the WCGA Scholastic All-America list. Landes is in Ithaca's Athletic Training program. Marquette is in Ithaca's Biochemistry program. Szembrot is in Ithaca's Psychology program. Trammell is set to graduate with a degree in Exercise Science.
