NEW ORLEANS - The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced the National Athletes of the Week on Tuesday. Tia Jones, a freshman on the Ithaca College women's track & field team, was one of eight athletes in collegiate sports to be acknowledged this week. Jones is the first female athlete to be nominated in the indoor season for National Athlete of the Week since 2017 - Katherine Pitman.
Jones recorded a time of 7.63 seconds in the 60-meter dash at the Cornell Greg Page Relays as she had control of the lead by 0.12 seconds to finish in first place. Jones set a new school record in the race, which was held by Marcia McCord in a time of 7.77 seconds in 2010. She also broke that standard during her preliminary race with a time of 7.74 seconds.
Last year, only two women in Division III ran faster than Jones' 7.63 seconds.
National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by the USTFCCCA Communications Staff at the beginning of each week to eight collegiate indoor track & field male and female athletes.
