No. 3 Wrestling Sweeps Trio of Duals at Wesleyan (Conn.) Quad Meet

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The third-ranked Ithaca College wrestling team hit the road for its penultimate road trip of the season when it traveled to Middletown, Conn., for the Wesleyan Quad Meet on Saturday afternoon. The Bombers swept a trio of dual meets on the afternoon to run their record to 12-2 in duals this season.

Facing a pair of NESCAC schools in Wesleyan and Williams, as well as ECWC rival SUNY Oneonta, Saturday's trio of duals figured to be a challenging test for an IC squad that has been firing on all cylinders down the back stretch of this season. The three squads were able to provide little resistance, as the Bombers conceded just five bouts on the afternoon.

Ithaca began the day by facing its ECWC compatriot in SUNY Oneonta. The Bombers never trailed, winning eight of the 10 bouts in a 33-6 victory.

Junior Ferdinand Mase kicked off the day at 125-pounds, scoring a 17-2 technical fall over Michael Muldoon to score an early five points for IC. Although nationally-ranked Austin Sisco (9th NWCA) was able to cut into Ithaca's lead with a 6-0 shutout decision over Tito Colom, that would be as close as the Red Dragons would get in the match.

The two sides traded decisions in the next two bouts. Unanimous fourth-ranked 141-pounder Ben Brisman (4th NWCA | 4th d3wrestle.com) scored a 10-4 win over Ahken Chu, while Oneonta's Tyler Brazinski was able to outlast Chris Wymer in a narrow 3-2 decision.

The Bombers blew things open after that, scoring wins in six consecutive bouts to close the match. Three of the those wins came with bonus points, beginning with Austin Whitney's (9th NWCA) pin of Daniel Murphy at 157-pounds. Nick Velez (3rd NWCA | 3rd d3wrestle.com) followed with a 7-1 decision over Ryan Marszal that stretched IC's lead to double-digits at 17-6.

Back-to-back bonus-point victories at 174-pounds and 184-pounds effectively sealed the match. First, Jaison White (9th NWCA) scored a 15-6 technical fall over Ralph Cazzetta at 174-pounds. Jake Ashcraft (3rd NWCA | 3rd d3wrestle.com) clinched things for IC at 184-pounds, registering his team-leading 17th pin of the season over Lantze Lange. The two wins upped IC's advantage to 28-6.

Freshman Dymir Davis-Carruth made his return to the lineup on a positive note with a 10-3 decision over Peter Pjetri, setting the stage for the most anticipated bout of the day, featuring a pair of nationally-ranked grapplers in IC's Jake O'Brien (5th NWCA | 3rd d3wrestle.com) and James Bethel (4th NWCA | 5th d3wrestle.com). O'Brien came out on top in the fierce battle, scoring the 2-1 decision to cap the score at 33-6.

The second match of the afternoon also figured to be a strong test, as IC battled the host Cardinals, which featured to nationally-ranked wrestlers and several other notable opponents. The Bombers once again prevailed, pulling away with wins in eight bouts and five triumphs which scored bonus points.

Ithaca raced out to an early 11-0 lead in the match with wins at 125-, 133- and 141-pounds. First, Mase scored a 6-2 decision over Amir Daouk. Tito Colom bounced back in a big way with a 17-1 technical fall over Tristan Stetson, while Brisman continued to rack up the victories in a hard-fought 4-3 decision over James Mathias.

The 149-pound slot continued to be a needle in the side of IC on the day, as Carter Armendarez was able to outlast Ithaca's Jawan Jones in a closely contested 2-0 decision. However, wins in the next four bouts put things out of reach for the home team, as IC pulled away.

Whitney continued his big afternoon with another fall, this time locking in the pin (4:01) on Wesleyan's Ed Pierce 1:01 into period two. Velez followed that up with a pin (2:34) of his own in 165-pound tussle with Aaron Cranston. White kept the run going with another bonus-point win, scoring a 15-6 major decision over Dominic Pirraglia. Ashcraft capped the run at 184-pounds, scoring his 18th fall of the season in 2:16 over Simon Chee.

The Cardinals snapped the string when nationally-ranked Devon Carrillo (5th NWCA | 5th d3wrestle.com) scored a fall over IC's Dalton Elias in 1:23. However, the Bombers got the last laugh in this one, as Jake O'Brien once again came out on top in his second ranked-on-ranked battle of the day against Isaiah Bellamy (3rd NWCA | 4th d3wrestle.com). O'Brien again scored just enough in a 3-2 decision.j

The Bombers closed out the final match of the afternoon with a dominant performance over Williams. Ithaca took 9-of-10 bouts to race past the Ephs for a 43-6 victory.

Ithaca once again raced out to a fast start to take a 14-0 lead through the first three bouts. Mase scored a 17-1 technical fall in his 125-pound bout, while Colom followed with seventh fall (1:04) of the season over Ben Morton. Brisman capped the stretch with a 13-7 decision over Alex Pankhurst.

The Ephs got their lone points of the day at 149-pounds, as Brendon Seyfried was able to put Jawan Jones on his back just 10-seconds into the bout. The sudden defeat did not spark a rally, as IC closed out the match with wins in the final six bouts.

Whitney continued his big scoring afternoon with a 20-3 technical fall over Jake Savoca. Velez and White each scored bonus points in wins over brothers Luke and Nick Anselmi. Velez registered a 22-6 technical fall over Luke Anselmi at 165-pounds, while White notched a 9-1 major decision over Nick Anselmi at 174-pounds.

Ashcraft continued to dominate his opposition, notching his third pin of the day in 2:15 over Williams' Chris Washington. The fall brought Ashcraft's total to 19 on the year.

Finishing out the day was Elias, who scored an 8-3 decision in his 197-pound bout. O'Brien received a forfeit at 285-pounds.

The Bombers return to action next Friday, February 9, when they travel to Wilkes University for a 7:00 p.m. dual.
