NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Ithaca College baseball team lost both games to open the 2016 season to Susquehanna and Christopher Newport on Saturday in Newport News, Va. Ithaca dropped a 15-5 decision to Susquehanna and then fell to Christopher Newport, 17-1.
GAME ONE: Susquehanna 15, Ithaca 5Junior
Trevor Thompson went 3-for-5 in the opener, smacked a solo home run in the sixth inning and doubled. Thompson also scored twice and drove in two runs.
Senior
Cameron Oathout went 1-for-4 with an RBI, as did freshman
Webb Little. Senior
Zach Cole drove in the other run for the Bombers, who led 3-1 after the first inning.
Susquehanna blew the game open with eight runs in the top of the eighth inning.
Senior
Benji Parkes suffered the loss in 4.1 innings pitched. Parkes gave up eight hits and five earned runs with three strikeouts. Classmate
Ryan Contegni entered for 3.1 innings of relief before freshman
Josh Carney finished off the final 1.1 innings on the mound.
GAME TWO: Christopher Newport 17, Ithaca 1The Captains scored seven runs through two innings to run away with the victory. Christopher Newport added seven more between the fourth and fifth innings and then plated three in the seventh.
Ithaca scored its lone run in the ninth.
Freshman
Sam Little went 2-for-2 with a walk, while his brother Webb went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Senior
Brandon Diorio started for the Bombers and lasted one inning. Diorio gave up seven runs on four walks and four hits.
The Bombers play again tomorrow against Virginia Wesleyan at 12 p.m. on Norfolk, Va.
